ABOUT NURTURING START OT

Welcome to Nurturing Start Occupational Therapy

At Nurturing Start Occupational Therapy, I am passionate about supporting children to thrive in their everyday environments. Based in Brisbane, I offer both clinic and community-based services tailored to the unique needs of each child and family.

The services include comprehensive functional assessments, individualised therapy sessions, school and community-based support, and equipment prescription. We primarily work with children who are neurodivergent, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Down syndrome, and other developmental conditions.

My goal is to provide individualized ways to support and assist children in their:

  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Emotional and sensory regulation skills
  • Handwriting and school-based skills
  • Daily self-care skills
  • Cognitive skills such as organization, planning and recall.

Nurture is defined by the care and attention given to someone or something that is growing or developing. Using nurture in therapy will help to develop social and emotional skills, support growth and build resilience while allowing the child to feel better about their self as they learn.

Without nurture many children struggle more through the developments in their life. As a mother and a paediatric occupational therapist my goal is to nurture each child’s uniqueness in their own environment and allowing the child to achieve their own realistic goals with the appropriate assessments and skills required.

At nurturing start OT, I use a holistic approach with the child and the parent by working collaboratively toward what is important for you as a family. As the parent of the child, you will know your own child best. It’s essential to have a family centered approach to find strategies that work to encourage and empower your child to achieve their goals in life.

THE PROCESS

Initial Appointment:

The initial therapy appointment consist of a 90minute block. The initial 60 minutes will be completed with just the parents/caregivers. This is usually completed online (video or phone call) Allowing for a thorough discussion of concerns and background without impacting on the positive relationship we want to build with the client. During this session, you may be requested to complete some questionnaires and identify goals for your family. Post the initial consultation, the occupational therapist will also need a 30minute post appointment for planning, resources and notes completed.

First Therapy Session:

This is a 60 minute block broken down to 45 minutes therapy session and 15 minutes progress notes, planning, preparation for next session. During this session we will complete further assessment of your child and start to build a safe relationship with them. This allows us to effectively develop and tailor our therapy plans to the needs of your child and family.

Therapy Plan:

Following this a Therapy Support Plan will be developed outlining the goals you have identified and what strategies we will be using to address these goals. We will further identify a therapy continuity plan in the case of COVID isolation, or other occurrences which might impact on the regularity of appointments. A new service agreement (for NDIS participants) will be completed at this point outlining the therapy plan and cost.

Therapy Appointments:

Depending on the goals identified therapy will be completed in the appropriate environment. This might be in the home, school or community. Sessions are 60 minutes with 45 minutes completed face to face and the remaining time used to complete notes and planning for the following session as well as COVID safe cleaning. Sessions notes are sent to caregivers following each appointment.

School observations/consultations:

Your therapist will identify whether a school observation will be beneficial to your child’s therapy plan. At times there may be challenges occurring in the education setting where it would be of benefit to have the OT consult with the school.

Multidiplniary Consultation:

We will work hard to ensure we are supporting your child effectively. We will contact your treating therapy team when we start therapy. We will also encourage regular touch bases with the other therapists to ensure we are all working together to support your families.
